Last week, I finally bit the bullet and reached out to a group of veterans who fought in the area of Afghanistan where my second book takes place. I gave them some background about my novel (series), and about myself, and I asked them for help connecting me with people who might be able to provide some of the real-life details of what it was like to be on the ground in this particular area.
As soon as I hit the send button, the anxiety started. I was worried about how they might perceive my request, and worried that they might dismiss me outright. But within ten minutes, one of the administrators got in contact with me and expressed his excitement about the project. It was revitalizing.
